Introducing Buzao - The New Collection Unlike Any Other
Young, rebellious and spirited. These are just three words to describe new Guangzhou-based design label Buzao [pronounced Bu-tsao]. While the name translates as ‘I don’t know’, one thing is for certain – the creative minds behind this brand are leading the way in the design of remarkable furniture, lighting, jewellery and design objects crafted from materials found in nature.
The Buzao brand is an offshoot of pioneering Chinese experimental design studio, Bentu, which has been making a name for itself on the international design stage thanks to its collection of beautiful designs made from recycled materials, such as concrete and ceramics. Launched at Milan Design Week in 2012, Bentu’s minimal and refined designs, coupled with innovative manufacturing techniques, saw it win a prestigious Red Dot Award earlier this year.
Buzao started life as Bentu’s ‘home made’ series. Since launching as a brand in its own right, it has continued to apply the same focus on research, development and design. While Bentu focuses on materials like recycled concrete, Buzao works with natural materials, such as marble and lava, and this forms much of the brand’s personality.
Bentu and Buzao share the same designers, which provides further opportunity for experimentation and creative expression.
Buzao’s Shang Pendant Light is crafted from lava stone and brass. The striking contrast between the smooth, elegant brass and the organic, textured finish of the lava stone gives their classic bell-shape and conical form a new edge.

While the perfect imperfections of a natural material like lava stone are a prized design feature of much of Buzao’s collection, it also crafts beautifully refined pendant lighting from marble.
Buzao’s unique aesthetic also extends to its lava stone jewellery collection, which has a special tactile quality. The beautifully simple designs include necklaces featuring textured lava stone spheres and bracelets crafted from this earthy molten rock material with brass accents.
For a brand with such a clear design expression, the translation of its name may seem surprising. But we know we’re in for more inspiring designs from Buzao. It seems to come naturally.
