Optical Illusion: Bentu Design’s Sculptural Wall Tiles

Posted by on

Bentu Surface recycled-concrete tiles add sculptural dimensions to interior spaces. With geometric formats and grooved, abstract surfaces, the tiles bring intriguing dynamic effects to feature wall areas such as splashbacks, bathrooms and courtyards.

The Bentu Surface collection evolved from Bentu Design’s ongoing experiments with waste materials. Driven by raising environmental consciousness and social responsibility, Bentu salvages and recycles materials from construction sites and the stone and ceramic industries to bring attention to the significant waste issues in China.

The wall tiles are made from a mixture of new and recycled concrete from demolition sites with reinforcing elements. The design of the tiles explore how concrete can be used to visual effect, creating contrast, pattern and dimension, and how it can be used to emotional effect within an architectural space.

San 3D tile has a hexagonal shape and a raised, angular form to create a rolling landscape across the wall. This can be combined with San Flat tiles, which have a flat surface, and with diamond-shaped San S and pentagon-shaped San M. The Six tiles are also hexagonal and have raised and grooved detailing that creates the illusion of a cubic form.

The Shadow tile (above top), winner of the Red Dot Award 2017 for Best of the Best, a simple grooved surface to create a dynamic star-like pattern. The perceived different tones, which create the visual movement, are a result of controlled different depths of the grooves. For a seamless linearity across the wall, the Tiao (second above) tile is 1200 millimetres by 600 millimetres and has long deep grooves. The tiles can be laid horizontal, vertical or offset in a diagonal pattern to create different visual effects on the wall.

Wave (above top) is a square tile with a gently undulating surface that creates a hypnotic three-dimensional ripple across the wall, as if bathed in dappled light. AO (second above) is also a square tile with a raised geometric surface, while the Character series comprises five different tiles that have abstract versions of letters N, H, R, X and J.

The Bentu Surface collection is available in white, grey or dark grey. Like all of Bentu’s concrete products, the material has inherent natural variances in texture and colour that make each tile and arrangement unique.
